A gantry crane is usually a large crane designed to crumple an overhead structure or workspace, typically attached to the top of a skyscraper. When purchasing gantry cranes you want to take several factors into consideration. For instance, you will need to determine what size of crane you need. Most typically the larger the crane the more expensive it will be as well. Additionally, you need to determine how many rail sections the crane will have. The number of sections can determine the overall weight of the crane and how much support it will require. Finally, you will also want to take into consideration the safety and operational dimensions of the entire structure.

The next step is to evaluate the different types of gantry cranes available on the market today. In general the most popular type of gantry cranes is the fixed beam style. The design will look something like a rung of a huge ladder, with beams that link to beams above and below. The final step is to determine how the actual lifting process works. Typically a vertical lift will use a platform or a piece of equipment (like a ladders) that is raised above the area to be lifted. From here the crane will access the area and either lift the object up to the desired level or place the object onto the platform and lower it into the area. 

Some vertical gantries use a hydraulic lift mechanism; this type of crane works by using pistons that force the crane to move along its path. Lastly, some gantries utilize a pneumatic system; this type of crane utilizes compressed air to move the crane along its path.
